Williams Town Disappearance

Dominique Fiorino

Thank you for such a great class I really enjoyed mysef!

I began my game with my autobiographical character. I wanted the introduction to seem like I myself was talking to whoever was playing so I tried to literally put myself in the game. I used CharNG and N+7 in a very similar way. I placed a passage from Hansel and Gretel into both programs to help me start off my story since it takes place in the forest and used some of the words that came out such as “foliage”. In Googlism I searched “Town” and the second thing that came up was “town is weeping” this made me include the emphasis of the town emotions towards Bob going missing. I used crowdsourcing for the mini quiz part of my game. I made a list of 10 multiple choice questions and gave it to 10 of my friends and the top 4 questions that were answered correctly are the ones I used for my game. After I finished about half of my story I felt stuck in where I wanted to take them next so I decided to recite my story into Otter.ai. When I did this I got the line, “Bob was hurt in hospital and now ohm.” Although I have no idea what the word “ohm” was supposed to be, it made me think of home since they rhyme. This is when I created the branch giving an option for the character to just leave Bob and go home. The first and second Oblique Strategies card both helped me come up with the structure of my game. The first one said “Left channel, right channel, center channel” and the second one said, “A line has two sides”. The format of my game relies on one central path with branched paths to the left or right. The third Oblique Strategies card I used said “Change instrument roles” this helped me place my autobiographical player. As mentioned before I included myself into the game because the role of the developer and the player are normally separate but I wanted to combine them. The fourth Oblique Strategies card I used said “Distort time”. I remember playing a twine game that had a countdown which I remembered after reading this card so I added that element into my game. The final Oblique Strategies card I used said “Define an area as “safe” and use it as an anchor”. I only partially used this prompt because I got this card right after I introduced the hospital setting. I wanted to define it as a safe area for Bob, but decided to not make it safe for the player which is where the signs of anxiety start to come in. I use botnik how I have used it in the past and that is for my title. Nothing that I got really worked with how I wanted my story to go but I saw that one of the options under “Harry Potter Narration” was the word disappear which I used in my title. I used the Anagram Generator to get the names of Ace and Rachel. I got Ace by putting in “Male Character” and I got Rachel by putting in “Female Character”.
